What each imaging type is used for

Different studies answer different questions. Here's what Dr. Barnes is typically looking for when he orders each one.

Bone and joint structure

X-ray is the fastest and most accessible imaging study. It shows bone alignment, fractures, arthritis, and joint spacing clearly. Most orthopedic evaluations begin here.

Commonly ordered for:Fracture evaluation, arthritis staging, alignment checks, post-operative implant review.
MRI
MRI

Soft tissue and bone marrow

MRI uses magnetic fields — no radiation — to produce detailed images of ligaments, tendons, cartilage, menisci, rotator cuff, and bone marrow. It's the gold standard for most soft-tissue diagnoses.

Commonly ordered for:Ligament tears, meniscus injuries, rotator cuff tears, stress reactions, labral tears, nerve compression.

Complex bone detail

CT produces cross-sectional images with exceptional bone detail. It maps fracture patterns, guides surgical planning, and is the preferred alternative when MRI is not possible due to metal implants.

Commonly ordered for:Complex fractures, pre-operative planning, post-operative implant assessment, patients with MRI-incompatible hardware.

Tendons, bursae, guided injections

Diagnostic ultrasound uses sound waves to image tendons, bursae, and soft-tissue structures in real time. It is also used to guide injections accurately into joints, bursae, or tendon sheaths.

Commonly ordered for:Rotator cuff evaluation, Achilles and patellar tendon pathology, carpal tunnel, bursitis, soft-tissue masses, guided cortisone or PRP injections.

Bone density / osteoporosis

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry measures bone mineral density. It is the standard test for diagnosing osteoporosis and assessing fracture risk — particularly important before elective joint replacement.

Commonly ordered for:Osteoporosis screening, fracture risk assessment, monitoring response to bone-strengthening treatment.

Stress fractures, infection, tumor

A nuclear medicine study that highlights areas of rapid bone turnover. It can detect stress fractures days before they appear on X-ray, and is used to evaluate bone infection, metastatic disease, and certain metabolic conditions.

Commonly ordered for:Stress fractures, suspected infection, tumor workup, metabolic bone disease.

MRI or CT with joint contrast

An arthrogram involves injecting contrast dye directly into a joint under fluoroscopic guidance, then performing an MRI or CT. It dramatically improves visibility of labral tissue, cartilage, and small ligament tears.

Commonly ordered for:Labral tears of the hip or shoulder, cartilage assessment, partial rotator cuff tears, wrist ligament injuries.
Fluoroscopy

Real-time X-ray imaging

Fluoroscopy produces continuous, live X-ray images — essentially X-ray video — allowing a radiologist or surgeon to watch structures in motion. It is used to guide injections, confirm fracture reduction, and deliver contrast for arthrograms.

Commonly ordered for:Guided joint injections, fracture reduction confirmation, hardware placement, arthrogram contrast delivery.

Imaging orders for both HRMC locations are routed through central scheduling at 928-302-5000, which completes pre-screening before calling you to book. Metal artifact reduction is available on the hospital scanner. MRI under sedation is not currently offered while HRMC finalizes protocols with a new anesthesia group — call before relying on it. Patients with implanted metal or devices go through a screening process; bring your implant card. For routine outpatient X-ray, MRI, CT, and ultrasound, use the HRMC Outpatient Diagnostic Center on Mesquite Ave.

Before you go

  • Referral or order: Bring the imaging order Dr. Barnes provided. Most outpatient facilities require a signed physician order before scheduling.
  • Insurance verification: Call the imaging center ahead of time to confirm your plan is accepted — coverage varies by facility and plan type.
  • Results routing: Please bring the printed report and the disc with your images to your follow-up appointment — even if the facility tells you they will send the results directly to Dr. Barnes. Having everything in hand at your visit ensures nothing is delayed or missing when he reviews your study with you.
  • Contrast prep (MRI/CT arthrogram): If your order specifies contrast or arthrogram, the facility will give you preparation instructions when you schedule.
